COMPARSA YAUGURU

Year 2008 Montevideo,Uruguay

Originally the group come together out of the need to collaborate with Uruguayan Roots in 1997, without being fully 

organized but with a great passion for "El Tambor" this led to ten people working together to bring to light a part of

Uruguayan Culture.

 

In 2001 we adquired the name "CANDOMBE YAUGURU"

and undertook the mission to bring to life our Afro-Uruguayan Culture here in Australia and Worldwide

We have performed in various Cities within Australia such as Noosa, Gold Coast and Canberra to name a few

representing our Culture and many Festivals within Sydney our Home.

In 2005, 17 of our members travelled to Uruguay to take part in the lergest Parade "LAS LLAMADAS" which is part of

one the biggest "CARNAVAL" in the world, by Sarabanda, one of the many Comparsas in the country and attained

first prize for best all round group.

 

Also in 2005 we were requested by the "MUSEUM OF FAIRFIELD" to take part in an exposition.

Our history currently resides there.

We return to Uruguay in 2007 to participate with "ESTRELLAS NEGRA" in Montevideo and were invited by the 

Group "DELADOKIN" for Las Llamadas in Punta del Este number one tourist destination in Uruguay and the great

honour of being asked to participate with another group known as "LA GOZADERA" to pay tribute to the great

"MARTA GULARTE" one of the greates icons of Candombe at Tacuarembo City.

 

In february 2008 we took part in a community music study organized by Brisbane University.

Towards the end of this year we invited two well-known artist of the Afro-Uruguayan Culture, Maria Victoria Riñon (Pico)

and Eduardo Da Luz and produce two outstanding shows.

This led to once again being invited in 2009 to participated in "LAS LLAMADAS" with another of the mayor groups in Uruguay.

 

"SERENATA AFRICANA" taking part in many events including the official Llamadas in Montevideo,

Punta del Este and many others Cities.

For many years we have participated in the Celebration of Uruguayan Independence Day held every August by

"URUGUAYOS UNIDOS" at Fairfield Showground where we performed a smaller version of Las Llamadas.

We run a "CANDOMBE SCHOOL", open to all ages and all Nacionalities to continue with our heritage this school

it is completely free for all people.

 

We had the great fortune of having visitors from Uruguay who are leaders in our Culture and give Workshops

for our group and interested people, some are Jose Daniel Garcia (Coque), Joel Montero and Diego Berardi,

they helped us in aspects such a Drumming, Structure, Vocalization, etc.

We have the great privilege of have been chosen by the "Uruguayan Embassy and Consulate in Australia"

to represent Uruguay in many "CULTURAL FESTIVALS" in Canberra and Sydney.

 

Our goal is to constantly improve our performances and teach future generations the "AFRO-URUGUAYAN CULTURE".
